ReMuNet
REsilient MUltimodal freight transport NETwork
The aim of the ‘ReMuNet’ research project is to design a resilient and sustainable multimodal freight transport network for Europe.
Initial situation
Climate change and geopolitical risks heighten the threat to Europe's transport network. ‘ReMuNet’ aims to bolster resilience through digital technology, enhancing preparation, response, and recovery of European rail, road, and waterways – while significantly reducing emissions.
Solution approach
- ‘ReMuNet’ introduces a methodology for describing transport networks, developed with key stakeholders for wide acceptance and regulatory integration, streamlining data exchange for improved decision-making and operational connectivity.
- An advanced algorithm calculates multimodal routes and manages capacity during disruptions, optimizing resource use and network flexibility.
- A collaborative platform connects logistics stakeholders, facilitating information exchange and collaborative disruption management, enhancing operational agility.
- Additionally, AI and reinforced learning model alternative actions, improving the network's adaptive response to disruptions, ensuring dynamic route and resource adjustment for European logistics resilience.
Expected results and benefits for the target group
- Establish a standard for describing sustainable European multimodal transport networks
- Lower emissions from European inland transport
- Enhance the multimodal freight network's agility in responding to disruptions.
- Offer more alternative routes and improve multimodal route planning efficiency during disruptions
- Develop new, cost-effective business models for better integration within the multimodal transport ecosystem
- Improve predictions of disruptions' impacts on multimodal corridors
- Accelerate aid logistics setup by civil protection organizations for crisis regions
- Form a unified data pool showing real-time use of European multimodal infrastructure, respecting data privacy laws
